Characters didn't come more colourful than Tony Greig
04.10.26, 18:56 2 Minute Read
Tony Greig would have been 80 on Tuesday. But he was too handsome and too overpoweringly glamorous to make old bones. Instead, he died of a heart attack in 2012, aged 66, though he was already seriously ill with cancer.
Greig was such an incomparable showman, such an astute salesman, that it’s easy to forget just how good a cricketer he was. When England’s great all-rounders of the past half-century are discussed the argument generally settles on Ian Botham, Ben Stokes and Freddie Flintoff, in that order. But Greig should be mentioned in that company.
After all, his Test batting average was a tad over 40. And he had a bowling average – fast medium and off-spin – of 32. Botham’s batting and bowling figures are 33 and 28 respectively, Stokes’s 34 and 31, Flintoff’s 31 and 32.
