When Sussex held their end of season awards earlier this month the club’s most consistent performer went home empty-handed.

But everyone was agreed. Sussex Grounds Manager Ben Gibson had had another outstanding season. And so have all the soil-and-toil men – there are ten of them – who work from their shed beside the nets at the top of the ground, as mysterious as the woodland elves who inhabit the huts in Tolkien’s Hobbit.

There shouldn’t be anything mysterious about Ben because he’s been working at Hove for 15 years, and has been the main man since taking over from Andy Mackay (now Pitch and Grounds Advisor at the ECB) in 2020.
